Skin sins while you were sleeping

7 little habits that are wrecking your skin

Skin sins while you were sleeping

Could your beauty sleep be speeding up your skin age?

Sleep is the most healing part of the day. As we rest, our cells are busy at work, repairing and regenerating.

It’s why skin experts advise preparing skin for the healing and strengthening benefits of sleep with a good, nighttime skincare routine. But you may be short-changing your skin with these mistakes.

1. Sleeping on your side

Sleeping on your side is a popular sleeping position. This position improves circulation, and keeps your airways open, which stops snoring. However, studies have shown that sleeping with your face pressed against your pillow causes fine lines that, with daily repetition, can become wrinkles. So, it’s a good idea to start sleeping on your back.

2. Sleeping with the wrong pillow

If you wake up with a puffy face in the morning, water retention is to blame, and it could be your flat pillow. A puffy face occurs when fluids have built up in your tissues, leaving you looking tired, especially if your eyelids are swollen. All this contributes to making you look older. Experts believe fluids pool in your face when you lie down. Adding another pillow or using a thicker pillow to elevate your head will help drain fluids properly instead of letting it settle in your neck and face.

3. Not changing your pillow case regularly

It’s important to change your sheets once a week, but especially so your pillow case. Even though you may have showered and cleansed properly just before tucking into bed, remnants of unabsorbed skincare, as well as excreted oil and dirt from your pores, can accumulate on pillows. Launder your pillow case every two or three days to prevent all that gunk from clogging your pores and contributing to a dull look, which can make you look older.
