Home remedies are convenient and wallet-friendly. But do you really know what you’re putting on your face?

Lemon juice

The good Lemons and other citrus fruits like oranges are effective spot lightening ingredients as they’re packed with vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant. It’s also able to reduce melanin production, thereby preventing spots from developing further when applied.

The bad It takes a really long time to work and the results are not permanent. Lemon juice is also acidic, which can worsen pimples or acne, if any.

Cucumbers

The good Cucumber juice is a natural skin toner, as it’s loaded with antioxidants and silica which help to lighten skin. It also soothes irritated or inflamed skin.

The bad Most of the cucumbers we buy are likely filled with residual pesticides, which can be difficult to wash off. As it’s the raw juice we use, we could also be applying harmful chemicals to our faces.

Potatoes

The good Potatoes are rich in an enzyme called catecholase[1],  which is able to lighten skin. You just need to slice a raw potato and rub it over the affected area. Once the juice has dried, wash it off.

The bad Unripe or damaged potatoes contain poisonous chemicals that even cooking cannot destroy[2].  What this means for a topical application is unclear, but would you want to take the risk?

Turmeric powder

The good Turmeric powder contains, curcumin, an antioxidant, making it an effective skin lightening ingredient. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which help against acne — one of the causes of dark spots.

The bad Fact: turmeric stains[3]. How long that stain lasts depends on the purity of the turmeric powder. While the stain isn’t permanent on skin, if you don’t have the time or patience to rinse off well, you may unintentionally leave your home with a not-so-trendy orange hue.

For serious cases of hyperpigmentation, specially formulated skincare products have been clinically tested for safety and effectiveness. While we do love what nature has provided us, when it comes to skincare, we’re big advocates of going with what scientific research has proven to work.
