Uneven Skin Tone

Uneven skin tone can be somewhat of a scourge for many.
It’s the irregular darkening of the skin caused by the overproduction of melanin – the pigment in the body that colours hair and skin.
The scientific term is hyperpigmentation, and there are a number of reasons why we may experience this form of aged skin.
Thankfully, there are measures available, to lessen and even help prevent, uneven skin tone.

What Causes Uneven Skin Tone?

A number of factors can contribute to the development of uneven skin tone in an individual.
Although some could be deemed out of our control, most causes are preventable, and Pond’s has the suite of skincare technologies to assist.
These are the main causes of uneven skin tone:

Melasma

Melasma is hyperpigmentation that comes about as a result of hormone-related changes or stimulation.
These hormonal shifts often come with life events like pregnancy, or after the introduction of contraceptives.

The Sun

Skin that’s exposed regularly to the sun, without measures of protection like a Sun Protection Factor, or SPF, will eventually start to display hyperpigmentation caused by sun damage.
When we’re exposed to too much harmful UV light, the skin counters that by attempting to protect itself with an overproduction of melanin in those areas.

Pollution

Simply by stepping out to tackle your day, you’re exposing your skin to the harsh outside influence of particles and gasses in pollutants from traffic and industrial wastes. And they’re tough to avoid – they’re a biproduct of every populated city or town.
These chemicals can penetrate the skin, causing the patches of uneven tone, and particularly in one of the body’s most exposed areas: the face.

Inflammation Or Injury

Uneven tone can affect areas when scarring has occurred, usually from either an injury to that area of the body, or after inflammation that can flare up in the presence of various skin conditions like eczema or acne.
